What a load of rubbish!

Elijah has an obsession. A very unusual obsession. It's a trait of SPD. Obsession over certain things. When he went to the doctor - somewhere he hates - the doctor gave him a urine sample container (clean one!!) with jelly beans in it. Elijah carried that around with him all day; taking them out, licking it, putting it back... and in the end it was a sticky mess - but he wouldn't let go of it.

He's had an obsession about the garbage truck for a month or so now. He absolutely freaks out if he sees one, and tells me we have to go home so he can stand on the trampoline and look at it. It's nowhere near our house. On garbage days (kindy morning as well), he is anxious to go home to get on the tramp and watch for it. He jumps on the tramp for AGES, waiting for it to come by our house. If he hears a truck of any kind up to 2 blocks away, he freaks out, and bolts to the trampoline.

It baffles me. I don't understand it, I really don't. Why the garbage truck?? Somehow, seeing the garbage truck drive past, pick up our garbage and drive away, is one constant he feels he can rely on, and somehow this is something that controls his world. I'm still shaking my head... I don't get it. Oh well... I am not supposed to get it I guess... whatever makes him happy. I dread the day when we miss the truck or have to be out on garbage day - he will not be a happy camper.

James had an obsession with the garbage truck when he was about 3. He used to call it (and still does at times) 'The Big Bum Tractor" and he would have to wake up at 6:30am when it would drive past and look out the window at it picking up the rubbish and driving away. If he see's one now while we're out and about he gets all excited and has to stop and watch it for a while.

I don't know if it is anything to do with some playing I did with him recently. I was showing him how to use his scoop and tipper truck toys to take things to the "rubbish dump", which thought was great. Otherwise... no idea!

My kids also used to look forward to the garbage truck when we lived in the city! It seems to be especially interesting to boys.
